Chamsulvar Chamsulvaraev — champion and terrorist

On September 22, 2016, in the news feed, there was probably no surprise news about the programs in the territories controlled by the terrorist organization ISIS, banned in Russia.
However, this post was destined to be special. One of the victims of the American air raid was Chamsulvar Chamsulvaraev, a native of Dagestan, who played for the national team of Azerbaijan and brought her two medals of the World Championship.
All the victims, and there were at least five of them in the same car with Chamsulvaraev, were declared ISIS members.
But how did an athlete who has followed the rules of sports decency all of a sudden turn to the side of darkness?

Chamsulvaraev was born and raised in Makhachkala, where he began playing sports. He was frankly lucky with the wrestling school: his parents brought him to the main forge of talents in Dagestan — the city SDYUSSHOR named after Hamid Gamidov.
From there came the Olympic medalists Magomed Ibragimov and Sharif Sharifov, as well as the triumphant Rio 2016 Abdulrashid Sadulayev.
In such an atmosphere, there was more than enough motivation, and Chamsulvaraev quickly progressed, but, despite his excellent form, he did not manage to qualify from the national team of his native country.
This is generally not news. Sports competition in Russia is very high, and only exceptional talents are given to become a full-fledged participant, and therefore many change their sports citizenship.
Of the aforementioned athletes, for example, only Sadulayev performed in the form of the Russian national team. Chamsulvar accepted the citizenship of Azerbaijan and began to attend major competitions.
“In Russia it is difficult to get into the main team, because of this it is impossible to play in such major tournaments as the World Championship. There is less competition in Azerbaijan. Yes, and not far from home. Therefore, I agreed to speak here. I really hope to show good results at the Beijing Olympics, ”said the wrestler after the awards ceremony of the 2007 World Cup, where he won the bronze medal.
When there were no camps and competitions, the athlete came to Dagestan. Chamsulvaraev did not maintain much of a relationship with childhood friends and classmates, but looking at the Porsche Cayenne in which he drove through Makhachkala, they understood that he was doing at least well.
During a regular visit to his small homeland, Chamsulvara found a bride, also very small … She was only 14, but her parents did not interfere with the relationship.
Two years later, the couple had a son, who, to the great surprise of everyone, was named Khattab. This is absolutely not a typical name for Dagestan. But here the point is even different.
The most famous person who bore the name (or rather even the nickname) Khattab was a native of Saudi Arabia, one of the main terrorists in the North Caucasus, a field commander in Chechnya in the 90s.
The liquidation of Khattab in 2002 was described as the greatest success of the federal forces in Chechnya since the capture of Grozny.
Chamsulvar Chamsulvaraev was an extremely promising athlete, who won the bronze medals of the World Cup and European Championship on the eve of the 2008 Games.
All those who were not indifferent were really waiting for his excellent performance at the Olympic tournament, but he did not submit to Chamsulvaraev.
The freestyle wrestler lost the first fight. Then, by the way, he was bypassed by another Dagestani Murad Gaidarov, who performed under the flag of Belarus.
The Olympics were ruined, but the athlete decided to continue to fight. In the post-Olympic season, he climbed to the second step of the podium and became the best fighter in Europe in his weight category, but later suddenly lost a place in the national team to young Ashraf Aliyev. After that, Chamsulvaraev disappeared from all sports radars.
In the ranks of terrorists
When exactly something went wrong is not completely clear. According to some of Chamsulvar’s acquaintances and several publications, the fighter began to be recruited back in the middle of the 2000s. Chamsulvaraev increasingly accepted and absorbed radical Islam.
According to one version, his worldview was influenced by the Dagestani preacher Muhammad Akhmedov (Abu Zeid), with whom he died in Iraq. Akhmedov knew many Muslim texts by heart, knew how to explain them in an accessible way, which made him feel comfortable.
His mother-in-law Karina (the name was changed in the interests of the investigation) could also have contributed to the radicalization of the athlete.
According to the Dagestani police, her brother joined the militants, her sister was the Islamic wife of one of the leaders of the local terrorists, and Karina herself was well acquainted with the female bandit underground of the republic and gave him various kinds of information.
But the woman assured that she was only engaged in human rights activities, she was not familiar with the Wahhabis, and her brother was forced to hide due to pressure from law enforcement agencies.
in 2014, Chamsulvaraev announced that he was ending his career and going to study in Turkey at an Islamic university. In fact, he purposefully went to ISIS.
As one of Chamsulvaraev’s neighbors recalls, who asked not to be named, the guy spent a lot of time in his native Serkogalinsky district shortly before leaving and actively communicated with young wrestlers. But not in order to convey his experience, but to tell what he knows about faith. Although in his youth, Chamik’s piety was not noticed.

Under the name of Al Bara, the former athlete began to lure girls from the North Caucasus to the Middle East and prepare suicide bombers from them.
It is Chamsulvaraev who is suspected of recruiting Diana Ramazanova, who committed suicide bombing in Istanbul on January 6, 2015. According to unconfirmed information so far, Chamsulvara was preparing this act of terrorism together with that very mother-in-law.
Liquidation of al bara
In late September 2016, Al Bara was driving through the Iraqi desert to the city of Mosul. Together with Chamsulvaraev, Abu Zeid and another Dagestan European wrestling champion Magomed Akhmedov were grinding sand on their teeth.
The terrorists had no idea that they were being led by the US special services for a long time and were waiting for the perfect moment to strike. When the ISIS car was in a deserted area, an American drone fired a rocket and blew the terrorists to pieces.
The death of men who brought so much violence to the world was grieved only in their small homeland. “People expressed their condolences. The goby was slaughtered.
There were no young people from Makhachkala. The condolences lasted three days, ”a relative of Magomed Akhmedov, who was killed in the same shelling, said dryly. Chamsulvara Chamsulvaraev had every chance of becoming a freestyle wrestling star. And then thousands of people could cry about the fighter, but in the end they only rejoiced at his death.
